City Ends Sampling of Clam Bayou Stormwater Pond Due to Consistently Safe Levels

The city’s Water Resources Department has been conducting a water sampling and analysis program since the wastewater overflow into the Clam Bayou Regional Stormwater Treatment Pond in early August.

Samples were collected from the city’s stormwater detention ponds, Clam Bayou and Boca Ciega Bay and were analyzed for a number of chemical and biological constituents. The key analysis was for fecal coliform. For more than a week, all of the samples have consistently shown fecal coliform levels within the criteria for the Florida Department of Health’s Healthy Beaches Program.

Due to the consistency of the results, the city is terminating the sampling program. The water quality warning signs around the stormwater treatment ponds will be removed.

The public is reminded that, as with all city stormwater treatment ponds, fishing, boating and swimming are prohibited.
